Barrier Free Home Design- Aging in Place for Man with Spinal Cord Injury: Making Home Accessible

Universal/accessible design of the home from an occupational therapy and a construction perspective. This blog is part of a quest for cool, convenient, functional design that makes life safer, easier, and as maintenance-free as possible. It's about the lifestyle.
House similar to Larry's Walk-Out Ranch

Larry is a very active 76-year old man that utilizes a walker but would like his home to be wheelchair accessible.

Goals for handicap home modification:
  • Keep 3 bedrooms.
  • Main floor laundry.
  • Attached garage.
  • 2 accessible egresses.
  • Whole house wheelchair accessible including the bathroom.
  • Move fuse box to main level for accessibility.

Larry has his driver’s license and a modified vehicle, which he travels in independently.  Larry is independent with all activities of daily living from chair level including meal preparation.
Larry’s Mobility Skills:
  • Ambulates independently with walker.
  • Ambulates independently with can.
  • Climbs stairs with stand-by assistance-requires handrails.
  • Transfers car to stand, sit to stand independently.
  • Utilizes a wheelchair for long distances.

Type of House:
  • 3-bedroom, 1 bathroom ranch house.
  • Several stairs to enter house.
